As mentioned in my last post I just got my first 91/30 last weekend and I'd really like to have a scope (not the scout setup)

I don't think the gun is anything special as far as collecting goes (I know, maybe someday). The numbers are force matched and there is some rust pitting on the outside of the receiver. It's a 1932 hex receiver.

So my question is, what do you guys think of the replicas like this

I know I could swap the bolt body out but I'd have to drill and tap for the scope and I assume that would ruin any collector value is has or will have. I just can't decide.

Before getting all hot to trot to add a scope...
Thanks for the link. I think there is a lot of good info in there. I can shoot fine with the irons and don't believe that scopes make a gun more accurate but I do think there are a couple points in favor of scoping (if the gun is accurate enough to justify it) some he talked about and some he didn't.

Light gathering
Range estimation (with mildot or parallax)
Target identification
Less target obstruction
Adjust for wind and elevation (I'm not talking about sighting in)

I'm sure there are a couple I missed. Also I don't agree that there is no reason to own a 4x scope but that's just my opinion

Agreed.

My biggest problem right now is deciding if I can bring myself to drill holes in this piece of history. I don't think I can.

Just out of curiosity. what are other peoples opinion of the scope I linked to? I emailed the guy that sells them and he says they are not parallax corrected. Not the end of the world but it would have been nice.

Anyone have any suggestions on something a little more modern that would look nice like the reproduction and possibly fit in the same mount?

I've found the scout setup to be stable enough for fast close up shooting and at that it excels. Especially with a reflex site but I think they are better suited for carbines that are used for combat accurate, both eyes open, short range work. I have an SKS with a holographic sight mounted with a scout mount and there is no better deer gun up to 150 yards but the mounts I've seen don't hold zero all that well.

Some of the newer guns that have scout position mounts from the factory are rock solid but I have yet to see one that replaced the rear sight that was. Maybe the one for the MN is the exception? Anyone do any 350+ yard shooting with one?
