Does the shank diameter differ from the straight bolts? Do they vary in size? Some appear to be 3/8 some 5/16. Anybody?

The Russians never used US/English measurements. They used proprietary measurements until around 1916 and then the metric system. The bolt handles seem to vary a good bit and no idea of what the original spec is. I measured several rifles with a variance in US measurements of .355" to .370" which could nominally pass for 3/8".

There certainly is some variation in bolt arm shape and diameter. Most of these are pretty close to 9mm.
