What size nail do people use to replace the front sight post?

Could a micrometer be used to get the diameter if the post then find a suitable nail?

I am not totally new to Mosins and have 3 but is the idea to replace the front sight post with a taller nail intended to bring the aim lower? I did read here that the Russian soldiers were trained to aim for the belt buckle in order to hit the chest area? Am I correct in assuming this is the truth? I would think that some equivalent diameter sized steel bar stock would work as well if not better, especially stainless stock.

A common practice if you have the need to raise the front sight is to get a small heat shrink tube, shrink it on and cut to desired height.
