Can't figure out just what to do with that darn huge thing other than make some Shashlik?
Well here is a good solution and it really works.

I ran across this photo in an old book about Leningrad and immediately just tried it out.. This works really well and secures the bayonet really well.

Seems as though it might lead to some stock damage. Yes/No?

Maybe if you want to slug the thing around belly crawling but then if you are doing so I doubt you care the stock condition. Seems to me the bayonet just locks right in and stays put away from the stock. I had to add an extra hole to this sling (which is post war) to tighten it up but my era emergency sling holds it even tighter. With the addition of the muzzle support and harness it holds it even tighter. There is little movement of the bayonet rigged like this. It is very much effectively held in place and out of the way. The Bayonet actually stays quite far from the stock and rests really only on the bands. This does put some pressure on the cleaning rod but not so much as it would alter it or bend it.
