So I am preparing for the worse and stocking for different caliber long guns and hand guns. I was thinking about a a"long range" rifle and was considerring the civlian M-14, M1A1. Pretty pricey along with the ammo. Them I did a search on 8mm vs. .308 and what I saw was comparable calibers. I have a Brazilian 8mm along with a Turkish Mauser. I must admit I have not shot them very much but I do like them and the ammo is dirt cheap. I think I could buy 2-5 k rounds at a fraction of the price. Scope one up and I think I am better off stocking up on 8mm surplus.

What do you think?

8mm is cheaper to buy in bulk right now, the flip side is that most 8mm surplus that you are going to buy now is between 40 and 60 years old. That doesn't matter so much to me as I reload and can use old rounds for components.

As for me, I've got all my bases covered. I have rifles in 8mm, .308 win, 30.06, and 303 brit. I reload so I really just need to keep components in stock, but I buy up what I can, when I can.

Go with the 8mm, .308 is expensive to shoot, 8mm isn't, and practice a lot. If worse comes to worse before 50 of your rounds are used up you either won't have to worry anymore or you'll have a better rifle.

If you have a Turk that is bedded well, then it will shoot straight. If you have one in normal Turk trim, maybe not so much. You can guess how I know.

Buy Yugo M75 from the 90's available.. and the yugo 70's if you can find it..either is as accurate as any handloader can reasonably expect to produce..a few MMs wont matter(I mean a very few..and thats if its a damn good handloader)...However the diff between a bolt action and an M14 is substantial..If your truly worried you need to spend for the right tool

If you go the 8mm route stock up on ammunition .

Also , it would be prudent to have several rifles in

the caliber . After all , what is your life worth ?
