I purchased a battle pack on a whim and want to know if,
A. is it corrosive
B. is it safe to use in an FAL

the battle pack is drab green with a sticker that reads

140 rd
7,62x51mm
Ball M1A2
CTN
908 A 88

The boxes inside are 20rd boxes and the head stamp is 88 over 12

Pretty sure that all South African 7.62/.308 is non-corrosive. It will be Berdan however.

While it was on the retail market, South African ammo was cheap, yet accurate and highly regarded as reliable ammo.

SA ammo's detractors complained about excessive sooty residue compared to other (NATO spec?) ammo. Of course, a friend's wife said that she didn't like camping, because of all the dirt on the ground, so the level of residue from firing is largely a personal preference.

I bought several battlepacks back then & as I recall, a battlepack sold for somewhere around $27-30. I wish I had gotten more of it.

Since this thread is about 762x51, where is a good source to buy it. Ive looked all over the web, and theres a sprinkling of overpriced surplus, as well as very very expensive current production brass. Also theres the wolf russian stuff. Do any of you know where it can be bought at a reasonable price? If not I'll have to hang up my rifle.

Yes I checked it, BUT the choices are limited. I checked all the sponsors, then several others listed on the gun deals site. 762X51 prices are an outrage. I went on gunbroker, and found some there that while high, are likely less than what it will become. If you have a rifle that you can handle, using this round... get it now... Its later than you think.
