I have a Ruger Blackhawk with some problems. As I slowly pull back the hammer all the way to it's farthest position, the bolt sometimes does not lock in the recess on the cylinder. I have to grab the cylinder and turn it a little for the bolt to lock in the cylinder. I don't want to shoot it because the cylinder is not lock into position and might cause a big problem. Is the hand that turns the cylinder too short? Constructive comments welcome...

Thanks

I know the gun - I've had one since around 1974 or was it '75. Other than a trigger job, I have never had to do any work on it.

Have you had the gun for a while or did you just get it? If it was purchased new take it back. Does it feel like it requires too much force to cock the hammer (like maybe the cylinder is dragging or binding?) If it's an older gun it may just be gunked up and need a thorough cleaning. As you say, the hand may be worn or have the tip broken off a bit. Does it do it only when it's loaded or even when empty? If a round(s) of ammunition has a high primer that will cause cylinder drag.

Think about some of my suggestions and see if you can give us some more specific info. (You are right - don't try to fire it if it's not locking up!)

1. Had it a while.
Does it feel like it requires too much force to cock the hammer (like maybe the cylinder is dragging or binding?)
2. No bidding from anywhere. Hammer is easy to pull back.
3. Pistol is cean inside and out.
As you say, the hand may be worn or have the tip broken off a bit.
4. Hand does have wear on it.
Does it do it only when it's loaded or even when empty?
5. Does it loaded or unloaded.
If a round(s) of ammunition has a high primer that will cause cylinder drag.
6. No primer drag.

Ok, I see you made it over to the Ruger forum. I'm not a member, but I checked it out. It sounds like mechanical wear or a bit of the end broke off the pawl (assuming it worked ok at one time.) I reckon the folks over there can give you more help than you need - good luck with your Blackhawk.
