.44 mag out of a rifle?

I only have one .44 mag, a Marlin 1894 in the 20" barrel configuration. I love this little guy for deer and blasting. It has a 1.5-4.5x Tasco on top. I sold my pistols I had because they are too brutish to shoot and I much prefer my .357. I bought 6 boxes of PMC 240 Gr. Truncated Cone SP for hunting, and really love them as they shoot so well. I have apx. 600 180gr JHP bullets along with 1000 240 Gr lead SWC.

My question is this: Are there any rifle powders that could be used for rifle 44 loads? I don't want 3000 fps, but the longer burn space in that barrel makes me curious. I will be buying W297 and have H110 already, which are both ok for the .44, so I am not forced to try anything.

One more thing, I am absolutely in love with PMC ammo in my .357 in the form of 158 gr JFPs. Does PMC sell just bullets somewhere so I can duplicate the loads I like?

Yes' the longer burn time makes more sense to me' i have had very good results with Re-7 in all streight case rifle cartridges for many years, .44-40 and .44mag. being my favourites.
chester.
You can't beat H110/Win 296 in a 20" 1894. It is my favorite!

Heres my recipe:

Once fired .44 mag case trimmed with Lee trimmer (I use anything I can get), resized with Lee carbide dies. Very light Lee factory crimp applied.
24 grains of Win 296 (max load)
CCI standard large pistol primer
Paper jacketed TLC 430-265 RNFP (Lee mold)
1650 FPS out of 20" pressure lapped Marlin 1894 with micro-groove barrel
1350 FPS out of 7.5" Ruger Bisley

Expect <3 inches at 100.
44 mag..20gr 2400 rem 240JHP absolute deadly out of rifle...accidently killed two deer with one shot
bootleg,
My manuals have a separate listing for 44 mag (Rifle) The powder selection is the same as the pistol data. The max loads very just a little with rifle max actually a tenth or so lighter than the pistol with some powders. One thing is consistent though. The rifle has a large velocity advantage. One example is with H110 where the rifle gets 400 fps. more than the pistol with the same load using the 240gr JHP. So essentially there are no special powders for the rifle. The rifle's longer barrel just is more efficient. So compare data if you intend to load for both pistol and rifle and load one load for both.
Bullets themselves might actually be the biggest difference http://www.shootingtimes.com/ammunition/hunt_121305/ might want to load up some solid coppers or soft points instead of hollow points... 44 mag going too fast from a rifle might just not penetrate deep enough and hold together long enough if your shot is too close and you are still carrying too much velocity.
Wow... And here I am shooting 200gr LRNFP with 5.5gr of American Select... Sorry, thats the cowboy action shooter in me speaking out!

Try a 300 grain hard cast semiwadcutter. It is fine bambi medicine, and does woundrous (pun intended) things to alloy engine blocks....
Hahahaha! I know what your talking about!!! I knocked down (literally) a yearling doe with a S&W.500Mag 400gr semi-jacketed flat point. It was the perfect INSTANT KILL SHOT. One clean .50 cal. hole on the in and out.... Words do not describe the satisfaction of knowing that the game is down and not going to get away after the shot! Needless to say I lost a LOT of meat....

+1 My old Hornady manual actually mentions this is the text and recommends the 265gr flat point for deer and bear.
TomBulls, Have you tried the Hornady pointed rubber tip bullets in the 500 S&W yet?
You can't expect 3000 fps or anything close to that.
Good luck!
Motor?? what the heck did you do to my name? LOL

This sums it up well....the pistol powders in efficient 44mag loads are on the "slow" side in most cases. These give good performance and velocity gains in the carbine barrel length. If you still are looking for MORE?

Then you need a bigger gun!
