Is it me or is this fine ctg loosing ground to your standard 9x19, .45, and .40 flavours? It's been a while since I've seen a "new" pistol in this caliber, or at least with any fanfare.

You may be correct.
Factory ammunition hasn't gotten any cheaper, that I can see. And while not hard to reload you do have a more limited bullet selection then the other calibers mentioned, so those factors could be causing a loss of popularity.
It could be going the way of the .41AE or 10MM.

Heck, I never figured it GAINED ground. Why would you want a 9mm bullet with .40 caliber ballistics, when you could do it with a .40 in the first place?

The only advantage I see in them is the bottleneck round should feed better from the magazine than a straight case.

Some years ago I was truly smitten with 357SIG... Recently though, I've found myself closer to Ronbo's camp, the novelty of a simple .40/.357 bbl swap wearing off some.

I still like the ballistics for the (arguably) niche round, but I could hope for higher pressure specs more closely approaching Magnum oomph...
A semiauto pistol caliber carbine with something that looks kind of like a 357SIG +P+ (plus maybe another +) would just be dreamy!

It was sold in to plenty of law enforcement agencies, and I know for a fact the air Marshalls use it, but those are institutions and not your run of the mill shooter.
It was not too long ago that you could find Speer frangible ammo for about the same cost as 9x19mm but now it seems like ammo is around $.50 to $.75 a round.

I would pay good money for a Springfield XD chambered in 7.62x25, 17 round mag, etc. If the general public was ever introduced to this caliber, it would be a top seller.

357 Sig is shaking hands with the 10mm .

FIVESHOT
Yep. Except that the 10mm mutated into the .40. I liked out 10mms, but the full power round was just too much for some. The 357 Sig apparently didn't have any where to go and once the LEOs got done buying it that was it.
