I have the opportunity to purchase what seems to be a numbers matching 1949 tula sks with cruciform bayonet for $900 does this seem like a good price for a first year sks?

1949 is uncommon rare, and thats super clean in the right stock (they were commonly rearsenaled) it would already be in the safe if it was me. Whomever is selling is valuing it as a run-of-the-mill Russian sks. That example is not.

Some of you folks are probably more knowledgeable than I am on this very special rifle, so I'll let the pictures do the talking.

1949 first year the SKS was made at the Tula Armory in Russia.

First issue features include spike bayonet and 90 degree gas port. This is for collecting not shooting. In USA these are hard to find.

this is true, you got to be careful and use good judgement. Sometimes you can get lucky one someone lists/sells something below market, but you also have to mindful for situations like this.

I keep a database of all of the correct 1949 rifles in the US. I think I got a pretty good deal on mine and I paid $2500. I came into this thread late, but at first I was feeling a bit ripped off. Sad to see someone doing this kind of stuff, but I have seen my own 1949 listed on Armslist several times. It is pretty easy to remember my 1949, as it's serial number is 1949.

Here is my current list of correct configuration 1949 Russian SKS rifles.

1) Oл1667 Light reurb all correct parts PCKE2000
2) HM1949 Light refurb all correct parts Prince50
3) юв837 Light refurb, force matched mag sold GB 5/2022 $5125
4) ГМ290 Light Refurb non matching but 1949 topcover. Bozmanite Offered on GB 7/22 for BIN $5000 did not sell.

Bummer you did not get a smokin hot deal, but a huge win that you did not get scammed.
