philthephlier, English 5-groove barrels, by '44 were supplanted more and more with 2-groove barrels by all except BSA-Shirley. Maltby, in particular would've been all 2-groove in '44.

There are two possibilities. First is that an early production 5-groove barrel came out of the storeroom and used or secondly the barrel has been replaced.

You'll need a plunge micrometer to accurately read groove diameter or place the slug on a clean sheet of paper, trace and then measure.
