The standard issue 1918 dated carrying case for the 1903 Springfield and 1917 Enfield shown in my pictures was modified by sewing on it a 30 cal. machine gun barrel case. Based on how well the sewing was done, I don’t’ think this was a “home made” job. Anyone have any idea of what this modified case was meant to carry and who did the modification? Thanks in advance.

Sam

Has anyone ever seen any pix of one of these being used other than a shooter at Perry? I have only seen Brits using rifle covers.

I've seen some pictures of M1 carbine carrying cases actually being used by US troops, but not the rifle cases. Of course, all that proves is what I've actually seen.

Riggers could and did run off this type of thing. Some are fairly obvious, such as carbine magazine belt pouches stuck onto various things. Others, such as this, can be more obscure as to purpose, since they can be literally "one off" items, based on somebody's specific request.
