Picked up a nearly all matching Gew98 this past weekend. The only thing mismatched is the ejector and the safety. Another downside is the rifle is cover is very fine rust that appears only on the upper side of the rifle. I suppose this spent many years stored in a very dry environment and the rust is from dust that settled on the rifle. Also, the bore seems to have some heavy rusting in the bore (it is soaking in WWD40) but it might be years of dirt.

Otherwise, the rifle looks to be a restoration project that would clean up to a very nice rifle. How should I proceed in cleaning this piece up?

Slow and careful, following thorough disassembly. Brass brush and lots of oil and patience.

I love Gew98s, and am jealous you found such a nice one. And remember, a couple rapid-fire volleys do wonders for cleaning out a cruddy bore.
