Saw a black rifle at the LGS and heard about them in passing, but don't know jack about the price for them. Did see the date was old, 1898, and looked mechanically sound.

Remembering the big curved rear sight, i'm guessing it was a M1891.

Saw i'm just wondering, is the asking price of $200 for a 1898 Carcano reasonable? A steal? Too much?

And this shop, also insisted on a Chinese Type 53 for $200 also :p

"Black" doesn't sound good. The critical issue is if it has been customized. Also be sure there's a bayonet lug. In the 60s, thousands of M91s were cut down into "Supremas" with a shortened barrel & no bayonet lug. Those are junk and not even worth $50.

That price wouldn't be too bad for a Carcano M91 in original form. SW

The black part concerns me - our Friend, Richard in NY specialized in collecting black Carcanos for a time. Some are just painted - some have been sporterized. Examine it closely before paying! SW
