OK' Back when Bert Hartman was Moderator here i remember him saying that when a firearm was sent back to winchester for work to be done they stamped a font' cant remember what or where.
The patina on this carbine barrel just dus'nt jel with the rest of the condition of this oldster, so i am thinking a later factory re-barrel?
Again thanks for any info.

I vaguely remember reading something about that serial number marking in Robert Renneberg's 1894 book. Like Chester, I recall that it was a mark to indicate that the gun had been back to the factory, but I wouldn't take that to the bank. I'll try to remember to look it up when I get home tonight.
