How much of a concern is an 1884 Trapdoor with a slight bulge ring visible inside the bore about an inch forward of the front barrel band?

Would this affect accuracy much? I'm not really worried so much about safety (or should I be?)

Thanks for your opinions and insight.

how much barrel length is there from the band/bulge area to muzzle ?

one fix for that is to oversize bore the barrel from the bulge to the muzzle, the result would be the barrel end would have no rifling in it at all, and be kind of like a silencer effect. It won't effect accuracy. I saw that fix in an old 1969 NRA Gunsmithing bible.

There's about 8 inches from the muzzle to the ring. Kind of a lot to bore out.

Tom, looks like one got stuck in the pipe at one time. Fortunately, the low pressure of the 45-70 didn't seem to do much damage. It's a visibly noticeable ring, but with a pick it is hard to tell, so it may be fairly shallow.

Also, with at least 8" of bore left between the ring and the muzzle, I would think that the effect on accuracy would be minimal.

I'll bet a seasoned gunsmith could apply judicious force to mitigate some of the slight enlargement, but if it shoots fine, why bother?

I've seen quite a number of BP rifles with slight ring bulges in the bore about three to six inches from the muzzle. The latest was a Civil War Starr carbine. If these were from stuck bullets being shot out with anything near a full charge load the damage would be more than slight (you should see what chewing gum can do in an M-14 flash suppressor). More likely someone had put a patch or rag in the bore of these guns and they were fired without taking them out, thinking they would do no damage. Usually you can feel them on the outside even if the bore is too dirty to see them.
