Does anyone here know if the later modle rolling block shotguns have thestrength and overall size to be chambered in 12 ga I have been told the 12 ga are not really 12 ga and I wanted to build a 12 ga 3 inch slug gun on this it has been a on again off again thing but never got off the ground. Dont want to go to all the trouble to rebarrel if its going to be unsuitable. there is one gunsmith I have talked to said do it and another said a 20 ia all that can be done mine is supposed to be already in 16 ga but no markings to prove that any help will be appreciated

Husqvarna made commercial rolling block shotguns in 12 ga., BUT ........ for 2.5" shells, not 2.75" and certainly NOT high pressure 3" shells. These shotguns are usually choked pretty tight so you will have to have the choke opened up before shooting any slugs in it at the very least. I know of one fellow that wanted to use his as a slug gun and blew the end of the barrel apart the first time he fired a slug through it.

Steve- considering Foster-type slugs as Benneke's as well as others lke Gulandi for instance, are designed with collapsing ribs that allow them to be fired through full choked barrels- without damage. This leads me to think perhaps the old Husky shotgun's barrel steel is not made from stern enough material for these loads.

Modern powders and loads, although not producing much, if any higher pressure than black powder loads produced at peak, does produce that pressure over a longer period of time - ie; farther up the tube and that is the reason many old guns will let go- about where you hold them, due to rapid tapers - or thinning due to risky re-chambering, mostly.

Since the gun noted by Steve blew the choke apart, this pretty much speaks to the material itself and the suggestion of opening up the choke first, is a good one, as well as not using high pressure ammo of greater length or strength than the gun was originally designed.

The rolling block actions, if the same as used on their rifles, are sufficient to accept any 12 bore load, but the original barrels seem not to be a good choice for such a venture.

i would use Eley 2 inches, 2 1/2......
then super polish bore diameter out through the choke taking out the diameter gradually out....
but slicking things up a bit...

My question is about the action and barrel wall strength at the receiver. My 16 ga is not real thick in the barrel thread area and I was wondering if a heavier 12 ga barrel was threaded in would there be enough meat in that area to hold a 12 ga slug load of app 11,000 pounds I think that is what 12 ga slug loads are rated at
